Keane & Beane, P.C., led by Principal Member Edward J. Phillips, is representing the two leading producers of foie gras in a lawsuit challenging New York City’s local law that will ban sales of the product in the City starting later this year. The case was highlighted in the Wall Street Journal on May 19, 2022. Associate Carina Zupa assists the firm’s litigation team on the case.
The suit contends that New York City violated a state law protective of farming in certified agricultural districts when it adopted the sales ban in response to concerns raised by animal rights activists.
“Today, it’s foie gras, a gourmet delicacy thousands of New York City residents enjoy,” said Marcus Henley, a spokesperson for the farms. “Tomorrow it could be chicken eggs that aren’t raised cage-free. Do you really want a small group of special-interest lobbyists controlling what you can and can’t have for dinner?”
Edward Phillips focuses on litigation and dispute resolution in federal and state courts where he represents businesses and individuals in a wide range of commercial matters.
