Elder Law and Special Needs Planning
Keane & Beane advises clients on long-term healthcare considerations and insurance, asset preservation strategies and Medicaid qualification. We prepare wills and trusts to maximize asset protection and secure future Medicaid eligibility. We assist clients in the preparation and filing of Medicaid applications, and represent them at "Fair Hearings" administrative/judicial appeals and in guardianship and other competency proceedings under the Mental Hygiene Law. We also counsel clients on issues relating to hospital discharge, medical coverage, admission to skilled nursing facilities, Medicare/Medicaid home care services, supplemental needs trusts for the disabled and reverse mortgages. We counsel families with special needs to protect the inheritance of a family member with a disability.
Our attorneys are well known for their contributions to the elder law arena. For example:
- Steven Schurkman is the author of "Elder Law Q & A: Answers to Questions About Estate and Financial Planning, Health Care Planning and Elder Abuse," written under a grant from New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services - and now in its 17th edition, which is widely disseminated throughout the state.
- Deepankar Mukerji is a frequent contributor to the New York State Bar Association's Elder Law Attorney and was a former Editor of the Elder Law E-News. Currently, as Co-Chair of the Elder Law and Special Needs Section's Legislation Committee, he is active in lobbying the State Legislature on behalf of the elderly and disabled.
Along with other attorneys, Mr. Schurkman and Mr. Mukerji are frequent lecturers on the topic of elder law and take leadership roles in elder law for legal associations as well as not-for-profit organizations.
