Steven A. Schurkman joined Keane & Beane, P.C. in 1985. Mr. Schurkman has more than 25 years experience in the practice of law, focusing in the areas of estate planning probate, elder law, real estate and commercial transactions. Since joining Keane & Beane, P.C., Mr. Schurkman has greatly expanded the trusts and estates department and developed its elder law practice.
Mr. Schurkman is currently the Chair of the Board of the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, Inc., a not-for-profit entity consisting of a coalition between Westchester County and its resident corporations to provide services for seniors to remain independent and active members of their communities. Mr. Schurkman is also a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
Mr. Schurkman currently is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Association. He serves on its Board Development and Investment Committees.
Mr. Schurkman also currently serves on the Board of Directors and was recently appointed as an official to the Executive Committee of the Westchester Estate Planning Council. Mr. Schurkman is also the Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Westchester County Bar Association.
Mr. Schurkman previously was a member of the Board of Directors of the Arthritis Foundation, where he chaired its Planned Giving Committee. In 1985, he received the Planned Giving Award and in 2001 the Founders Award from the Arthritis Foundation.
Pursuant to a grant from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, Mr. Schurkman authored “Elder Law Q & A: Answers to Questions About Estate and Financial Planning, Health Care Planning and Elder Abuse.” Now in its fifth edition, it has been widely disseminated throughout New York State through the continued support of the Pace University Women's Justice Center in collaboration with the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention at The Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale.
Mr. Schurkman is a frequent lecturer in the area of estate planning and elder law. He has appeared on Government Access Cable TV, Channel 35, and hosted “Sidebar”, the legal segment of a radio talk show for senior citizens known as “Generations” broadcast on WLNA (1420 AM). Mr. Schurkman has conducted hundreds of conferences sponsored by a variety of non-profit organizations, including the New York and Westchester County Bar Associations, the Arthritis Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, the New York University Faculty Staff Assistance Program and Pace University Law School. He has also conducted in-house training on legal issues affecting the elderly for health care and related professionals in hospitals and other medical and corporate sites throughout the metropolitan area.
In 2004, Mr. Schurkman was selected to act as overall statewide planning chair for the New York State Bar Association program entitled “Medicaid Planning With a Focus on Spousal Issues and Case Studies”, which was presented at five different sites throughout the State.
Mr. Schurkman is admitted to the bar in New York and Florida.
